Roiling Oceans Walkthrough
You start with a single Flagship, moored at a small island in the south, and 3 Lodestones on distant shores. The Zhon hold the north-west and north-east corners with 49 units: 22 Drakes, 8 Gryphons, 6 Krakens, 4 Rocs, 4 builders and 5 Lodestones. You do not have to destroy any of them. The mission is won when 30 minutes have passed and you still have a unit left.
The Flagship is your only builder. It can make Lodestones, Floating Towers, an Enclave and a Sea Fort, and the Enclave trains Priestesses, who build Guard Towers. Ring your island with towers before 10:10, when the first Krakens and Gryphons arrive, and keep the Flagship alive for the 8 Drakes sent after it at 25:00. The mission sets the same forces at every difficulty. It also runs a script of its own, and it names an allied player that the data gives no units. The guide cannot say what the script adds.
The Battlefield
The map is 5760 pixels square and mostly open sea. A large landmass fills the north-west, rocky and green in the north and sandy in the south, and your western Lodestone stands on its southern beach. A sandy island in the north-east holds your other 2 Lodestones, near its east edge. Your Flagship starts in the narrow harbour of a small island in the south, with an even smaller island just west of it. The Zhon gather in the two northern corners of the map, and their Rocs will set builders down near your outlying Lodestones.
11 sacred sites
- 1A free sacred site rated 2.0. Your Flagship starts just south of it, in the harbour.
- 2A second free 2.0 site, on the small island to the west.
- 3Room on the island for an Enclave, and for Guard Towers along its shores.
- 4The Floating Tower line. Krakens and Gryphons come for Floating Towers before anything else.
- 5The harbour. Keep the Flagship here at 25:00, with towers on both sides of it.
- 6Your western Lodestone, on a 1.0 site.
- 7Your eastern Lodestones, here on a 2.0 site and at (5616,2064) on a 1.5 site.
- A2 Krakens that set off at 10:10, and 2 more that wait here until 28:50.
- B2 more Krakens that set off at 10:10.
- C8 Gryphons. 3 set off at 10:10 and 5 at 15:10.
- D8 Drakes. At 25:00 they fly to attack your Flagship.
- EAt 5:00 a Roc sets a Beast Handler down here.
- FAt 15:00 a Roc sets a second Beast Handler down here.
- GAt 15:00 a Roc sets a Beast Lord down here. A Beast Tamer, landed at 10:00 further north, builds Gryphons just east of here.
- HThe Beast Lord's orders: 9 Drakes in a row from x 4960 to x 5600, between your 2 eastern Lodestones.
The Zhon Timetable
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| From the start | Nothing moves against you. The 4 Zhon builders board their Rocs. |
| 5:00 | A Roc sets a Beast Handler down at E. Its orders are to build 8 Hunters and 8 Trolls, then a Lodestone on the site where your western Lodestone stands, then a Sacred Fire at (992,3120). |
| 10:00 | A Roc sets a Beast Tamer down at (5472,1040), on the north-east island. Its orders are to build 6 Gryphons at (5440 to 5632, 1552). Between 10:00 and 15:00 the waits end for 14 Drakes in the north-west and north-east. The data gives them no orders after that. |
| 10:10 | 4 Krakens from A and B and 3 Gryphons from C attack your Floating Towers, then Skiffs, Harpoon Ships, Sea Forts, your Flagship and Transport Ships, in that order. |
| 15:00 | A Roc sets a Beast Handler down at F, with orders to build 11 Goblins along the shore at (1344 to 1680, 3040). Another Roc sets the Beast Lord down at G, with orders to build 9 Drakes at H. |
| 15:10 | 5 more Gryphons from C set off with the same list of targets. |
| 25:00 | 8 Drakes from D attack your Flagship. |
| 28:50 | 2 Krakens from A attack your Floating Towers. |
| 30:00 | You win. |
The Plan
Build the Island (0:00 to 10:00)
- Have the Flagship put a Lodestone on the 2.0 site at 1. It costs 304 mana and earns 20 mana per second. Then sail to 2 and do the same. With the 3 Lodestones you start with, your income rises to 86 mana per second.
- Build an Enclave (2116 mana) on the island at 3, and train 2 Priestesses (505 each). Priestesses build Guard Towers (2598 mana), which can shoot at fliers.
- Before 10:10, have the Flagship build 3 or 4 Floating Towers (3608 mana each) at 4, close enough to cover one another. A Floating Tower's harpoon reaches 710 and does 1089 damage. A Kraken reaches only 400, and it has 4101 hit points: 4 harpoons.
- Have the Priestesses build Guard Towers along the north shore of the island, behind the Floating Towers. The Gryphons that attack the Floating Towers then fly into the towers' arrows.
Hold the First Waves (10:00 to 16:00)
- At 10:10, 4 Krakens and 3 Gryphons come for the Floating Towers. Together, 4 Krakens can sink a lone Floating Tower (9147 hit points) in about 6 seconds once they are in range. Never leave one tower out on its own.
- At 15:10, 5 more Gryphons come. A Gryphon has 1911 hit points: 2 harpoons, or 10 Guard Tower arrows.
- Leave your outlying Lodestones to look after themselves. Zhon builders land near them at 5:00, 10:00 and 15:00, and the Flagship is too valuable to send there. Your 2 Lodestones at home earn 40 mana per second, almost as much as the 3 outlying ones together (45).
- Build a Sea Fort (2340 mana) on the island's shore. It can build a second Flagship (1237 mana), so that losing one does not leave you without a builder. It also builds Harpoon Ships, which carry the same 710 harpoon as the towers.
Guard the Flagship (16:00 to 30:00)
- Before 25:00, bring the Flagship into the harbour at 5 and ring it with Guard Towers on both arms of the island and Floating Towers in the water to the north. A Drake must come within 500 of the Flagship to breathe on it. Floating Towers out-range it, at 710.
- At 25:00, 8 Drakes come from D. Each has 2786 hit points and breathes for 721. The Flagship has 6112 hit points, so it survives one full volley from all 8 and sinks on the second. Spread your towers so that the Drakes are under fire from several of them before they get close.
- If the Flagship is lost, the mission goes on. You lose only when every unit you own is destroyed.
- At 28:50 the last 2 Krakens come for the Floating Towers. Hold on until 30:00.
Which Units Beat Theirs
| Zhon unit | Its threat | Your answer |
|---|---|---|
| Kraken | Water Ball, 790 damage every 2.1 seconds, range 400. It has 4101 hit points. | Floating Tower, range 710 and 1089 damage |
| Gryphon | Flies. Spear for 340 damage at range 510. It has 1911 hit points. | Guard Towers (range 480) set beside Floating Towers (710) |
| Drake | Flies. Fire Breath, 721 damage every 4.5 seconds, range 500. It has 2786 hit points. | Floating Towers, which out-range it, and Guard Towers in numbers |
Mana
There are 11 sacred sites on the map. Your 3 Lodestones start on a 1.0 site at 6, a 1.5 site at (5616,2064) and a 2.0 site at 7. They earn 10, 15 and 20 mana per second, and the Flagship adds 1, for 46 in all. A Veruna Lodestone costs 304 mana and has 5680 hit points.
The 2 free 2.0 sites at 1 and 2 are the ones to take, because they are right beside you. One more free site, rated 1.0, lies on the north-west landmass at (464,2256). The other 5 carry Zhon Lodestones.
You cannot build a Divine Lodestone here. Only the Priest of Lihr builds one, and he is not on your list.
Traps
- Floating Towers come first on the Krakens' and Gryphons' lists, and the Flagship comes fifth. With no Floating Towers, Skiffs, Harpoon Ships or Sea Forts in play, they go for the Flagship.
- The 25:00 Drakes attack only Flagships, but they attack every one you have, a second Flagship included.
- The Beast Handler that lands at 5:00 has orders to build a Lodestone on the site where your western Lodestone stands.
- The mission sets a unit limit of 100.
- The mission's script may add events that are not in the data.
